Access Radio Taranaki 104.4FM is a community access radio station. This means that the station exists to support and grow our community, by offering a broadcast voice to those groups and individuals who don’t currently have the opportunity to broadcast to their own, and other, communities. Access Radio is not a commercial medium. We do not sell advertising as our primary means of station support. We are primarily supported by a grant from NZ On Air. This allows us to work with community groups to bring their shows to air at a very minimal cost.
Our broadcast signal is very strong, and covers all of Taranaki other than the coastal area between Manaia and Oakura. This area is blocked by our mountain. Otherwise, our signal ranges from Waitotara in South Taranaki, through Hawera, Manaia, Eltham, Stratford, Inglewood, Whangamomona, Waitara, New Plymouth, Urenui and up to Mokau in the North. It covers all the small pockets in between these towns.
Our station facility is based in the old Telecom Radio-communications building at the top of Blagdon Hill (Maungaroa or Windy Point). Telecom and Chorus have shown their support for our community by allowing us to utilize the building for $1 per month. A large group of community volunteers, and community-minded businesses, provided the energy and resources to do a makeover of the inside of the building, and we now have offices, a meeting room, and two studios.
NZ On Air provided the funding for very high quality recording and broadcasting equipment, and the station broadcasts 24 hours each day, 7 days each week.
Access Radio Taranaki 104.4FM is appointment listening. Shows range from those that support individuals living with a disability to those that support new immigrants in their settling process. In between the community shows, there are ‘special interest’ shows that range from specific music genres to youth interests to religious interests. In between the shows, Access Radio Taranaki 104.4FM plays great music!
