Organic Weed Control Workshop

Organic Weed Control: Human-Scale Design and Management Weed management is the top challenge to organic vegetable production. But thoughtful rotation design and timely management can yield an abundance of food with very little ongoing maintenance. Tools, timing and technique are the keys to successful application of this design/management system developed and refined over the last decade. This workshop teaches to multiple intelligences to engage a diversity of learners.

Topics covered include:
• Overview of the four-year rotation
• Modified three-year rotation
• Regular, easy weed control
• Understanding No-Till systems
• Plant spacing and successive planting
• The use of mulches and compost
• How to make your own compost
• How to grow your own mulch
• The right tools, their use and care
• How to convert lawn to garden as part of the rotation
• Useful tips for growing tomatoes, capsicum, potatoes, pumpkins, broccoli, carrots, garlic, onions, and corn

Tutor: Nelson Lebo has over 20 years experience as a sustainability educator. He has received various teaching awards in the USA, where he also developed one of the most sustainable properties in North America before moving to NZ to pursue PhD research in permaculture education. Tuition: $40, with a $20 deposit due one week in advance. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.
